Heidi Blackwell: Leadership Team | Learning Specialist – Transitional Support Specialist

I am originally from beautiful northwest Montana.  I loved growing up part of a large, fun, family and we always enjoyed playing and watching sports, especially Grizzly Football.  We also spent a lot of time fishing, camping and hiking.

When I graduated high school, I joined the Army and had the opportunity to study Spanish and travel to several countries in Central and South America.  I also met my husband while in the Army, and after we completed our tours of duty, we moved to Chicago to attend school.  I graduated from Northeastern Illinois University in 2004 with my Master’s degree in Special Education.  In 2006, we moved to Urbana, Illinois, home of the University of Illinois (Go Illini!), where I earned a Master’s degree in education administration from Eastern Illinois University.

I have served as a special education teacher for twelve years, working with a wide range of students and in a number of settings. Most recently, I was the Inclusion Facilitator at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School in Urbana and loved working with the diverse population at this school.

My family and I moved to Oregon City this summer.  While I will be taking over as the learning specialist at Springwater, my husband will be teaching biology at Clackamas Community College.  We have two active little boys and are always looking for ways to keep them busy.  We are all very excited about exploring all that Oregon outdoors has to offer.

For me, the most exciting part about teaching is creating a team where everyone involved, teachers, students, and families, feels like they are working towards a common goal. I have been fortunate enough to work with many exemplary teachers and administrators in the past and am excited about applying what I have learned in a new setting.
