Springwater school stands on the shoulders of our parent volunteers! Can you carve out some time to contribute to our classroom? Below are our needs, listed roughly in order of priority.

Specials Slots:
Did you know that Springwater teachers’ only “prep period” during the school day is during Music, Artist in Residence, and Gardening? As a volunteer during one of these slots you’ll be doing double duty by supporting the students and giving the teachers precious time to plan, prep, and grade. This is our greatest volunteer need!

Music: Mondays 1:30 – 2:00
Artist-in-Residence: Wednesdays 10:00 – 11:00
Gardening: Thursdays 10:00 – 10:45

Friday Field Study:
If you have a flexible work schedule, please consider joining us for Friday Field Studies. It is difficult to conduct meaningful field studies as a full class of 22 students. Having additional parents along allows the class to break into smaller study groups, which are much more conducive to careful scientific observation, wildlife sightings , and developing a sense of connection to nature. Ideally, volunteers will commit to a trimester at a time, so that students can become accustomed to their group, and spend less time sorting out social dynamics and more time making scientific discoveries.
Friday Field Study: 8:35 – 12:00 (at least two needed per trimester)

Flexible slots:
Assistance copying, laminating, filing and prepping materials is much appreciated. It helps us for volunteers to commit to a regular, weekly slot so that we can have projects organized and ready for you ahead of time. We’ll be grateful for help with the countless tasks that keep our classroom running smoothly!

1 – 2 hours a week, on a regular schedule of your choice. Before, during, or after school hours.

One-offs:

Guest Speakers and Field Trips:
We love having parents share their expertise and passions with our class. Play guitar? Know a thing or two about electricity, geology, or water? Practice Tai Chi? Have another passion to share? Let us know, and we’ll find a 30-45 minute slot for your visit. We’ll also let you know about opportunities to chaperone class field trips throughout the year.

Physical Education:
Our secret dream is for a parent to lead PE every so often on Wednesday afternoons. The emphasis this year is on team building and sportsmanship, which could apply to most physical activities – from soccer, to dance, to juggling and circus stunts. Send me your idea!

P.E.: 2:30 – 3:00 Weds

Student support:
We need less student support in the classroom than the younger grades do. However, if you are able to commit to a regular day or two each week for the whole trimester, we’ll get you trained in our learning routines. That way, you can just jump in and help without a briefing from us, and kids will know what you’re there to do.

Math: 9:00 or 9:15 Daily
Reading: 10:30 M, Tu, Th
Spelling: 1:00 Daily

Greater Springwater Community:
There are many programs at Springwater that rely on volunteers. Please don’t feel like you’re “not contributing” if you’re not in our classroom. The impacts you make with programs like Read Naturally, OBOB, and Pizza Day ripple out and touch our classroom!

Thanks for all you do!
Let me know if you have any questions.
