On October 14th, both River Otter’s classes traveled by bus up to Mt. St. Helens in Washington to view for themselves the massive crater and learn about the eruption at the Johnston Ridge Observatory and Visitor Center. Although the drive was long, the view of the mountain made it worthwhile. Getting up close to such a big geologic event in our backyard made a serious impact on our students’ understanding of their place on our Earth. The views of the landscape around the impact zone (even 30 years later) showed the true power of this volcano. The students also learned about how people in the area were impacted, and examined how the forest is recovering. Thanks to teachers Troy and Faith, and all the chaperones who came along!
