Leadership model update and Leadership survey

Dear Springwater families,

We are so pleased to see our new and returning students settling into routines, connecting with new and old friends, and launching a wonderful year of educational and personal growth. Our teachers are off to a terrific start this year and are doing an amazing job forming relationships with their students and families and working with our leadership team in a productive and solution-focused manner. We are thrilled to see this excellent start to the school year!

The Board and Leadership Team would like to update you on a few topics with a focus on our progress on the development of our long-term Leadership Model.

We want to update you on our next steps and timeline for developing our long-term leadership model and answer a few questions that we heard on the temporary leadership model in place for this school year. We will start with some hearty “thank yous” to our community.

THANK YOUS!

We are proud of the impressive volunteerism we have already experienced from our community this year. We are grateful for all you give. Thank you for your support of our school!

We are encouraged by new lines of communication that we have seen begin to form in the past few weeks between staff, community, and the Board. We will continue to work hard on deepening those relationships. Thank you for your trust in building them.

We are excited about the input we received in our suggestion box. Parents and students alike gave us feedback and we appreciate hearing all perspective. Thank you and please continue the great input!

NEXT STEPS & TIMELINE FOR NEW LEADERSHIP MODEL

The Board and Leadership Team want to update our Springwater families on our work towards creating our new leadership model, including immediate next steps and long-term goals.

On August 30, 2018, the Board and Leadership Team met with a charter school expert from the Oregon School Board Association (OSBA) who we hired to help advise us on building a new leadership model for Springwater. Since that meeting, we created a community survey and a staff survey both distributed to respective community and staff to solicit input for our new leadership model.

In partnership with our OSBA consultant, we will analyze the input received from the community and staff surveys, extract themes from the analyzed input, and develop a strategic plan for creating a new leadership model that reflects the wants and needs of our Springwater families and staff.

Both the community survey and staff survey are currently being distributed. The community survey is posted on our website. We are also distributing the community survey in this email. If you have any trouble electronically accessing the community survey, we will have hard copies available at the school and at our Family Friday event tomorrow.

Please return your surveys to us by September 30th, 2018. At that time, we will close the input period and then meet with our OSBA consultant to begin the survey evaluation process.

All survey results are confidential – only our OSBA consultant will see the identity of the person who submitted them.

You will likely receive additional surveys this year as we progress in the development of our long-term Leadership Model.

The Board and Leadership team ask that all families do their best to provide us with their input. Our process will produce the best result when we hear everyone’s voice. Please participate in this survey and let us know if you need any support in doing so.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED ON TEMPORARY LEADERSHIP MODEL

We heard from our community that some families are having trouble understanding (1) the correct member of our Leadership team to contact for various matters; and (2) the timeline of our temporary leadership model and when we estimate that we will have a long-term school leader in place.

Leadership team contacts. Please contact any one of the Leadership Team members (Heidi, Jen, or Katie) for any issue you feel needs support from a school leader. Our Leadership Team is highly committed to communicating well with each other. If one member of the Leadership Team is not at the school on a day you need to connect with someone, please find another Leadership Team member and introduce yourself to open the discussion about your needs. If you do not know the Leadership Team members, please ask April or Rebecca in the front office or any teacher for an introduction. Heidi, Jen, and Katie are all very approachable and are sharing responsibilities – please do not worry about contacting the “wrong” person; they are all the “right” person for you and will find answers and solutions in an efficient manner.

Timeline for new leadership model. As mentioned above, this month, we are currently working through the information gathering phase of developing our new Leadership model. October’s focus is analyzing that data, generating themes, and crafting a strategic plan. November and December’s focus is likely going to be a deep dive into considering the best leadership models for our Springwater community based on the community and staff input we receive and the expert advice from our OSBA consultant. Ideally, we will have a Leadership Model decided in December-January with interviewing for any new leadership positions beginning in the spring.

The entire process may take all school year or we may find our ideal new model and perfect candidate quickly. The above timeline is only an estimate and we are trying to give our community and staff as much transparency as possible without committing to hard deadlines because we want the right model with the right leader, which may take time to find. The only hard deadline we can promise at this time is that the process to develop the new Leadership Model and find our new school leader will be complete by the end of the school year. We appreciate your patience and grace as we progress through this process.

We always welcome questions about the process and will provide you with periodic updates like this one. You are welcome to join us for Board meetings and are invited to ask any Board member or Leadership Team member for an update. We will do our best to share information as soon as it can be shared.

As always, please contact any Board member or member of the Leadership Team with questions. Our next Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 6pm at Clackamas Community College – please join us.

We hope to see everyone at Family Friday this week!

Very truly yours,

The Springwater Board* & Leadership Team**
